Screenings & Evaluations – Clear Lake & Greater Houston

Tools to Understand Your Child’s Educational & Developmental Needs

Did you know that your child can be screened or evaluated by your local public school at no cost to you? Ask us how to request a screening or evaluation through your public school district, even if your child is homeschooled or attends a private school.

Screenings Available

The purpose of a screening is to determine whether there is enough concern in a given area to warrant a full evaluation. If your child is under the age of 5, we’ll invite you to bring him or her to the visit with you, so we can observe your child’s play skills while we discuss your concerns. We offer screenings for the following areas and age groups:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder – screenings for ages 12 months to 17 years
  • Developmental Delays – screenings for ages 2 ½ years to 5 years
  • ADHD – screenings for ages 5 years to 17 years
  • Dyslexia Screenings – kindergarten through 12th grade

What Does an Evaluation Include?

The length of an evaluation varies depending on the type of testing requested and the age of the child. Each evaluation includes a parent interview (developmental history, review of concerns, review of educational performance and history, etc), formal and direct assessment with the child, scoring and interpretation of testing, report preparation time, and a comprehensive report of results including extensive, individualized recommendations and interventions suggested.

How Soon can my Child be Evaluated?

The length of time between an initial consultation and the evaluation session(s) varies depending on the time of year, but is currently no more than 2-4 weeks.

How Much Does an Evaluation Cost?

The cost of an evaluation is based on many factors including the age of the child, specific area(s) being assessed, complexity, previous evaluations, and other factors. Because each child is so different, we must have a consultation first in order to clarify the evaluation plan. Evaluations typically range in cost from $875-$3000 but can be well over this range in some cases. We are considered out of network with insurance companies for evaluations, but can provide the documentation for you to submit to your insurer to seek reimbursement. We encourage all clients to check with their insurers prior to the evaluation process to determine whether prior authorization is required or if there are any other limitations to your benefits to be aware of.

How do I Schedule an Evaluation?

The first step in scheduling an evaluation is to come in for a consultation with one of our psychologists. In this visit, we’ll review your concerns and decide on an evaluation plan to address suspected areas of need. We are unable to provide a quote for evaluation without first meeting with you for a consultation.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Assessment

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessment is one of the most common and potentially complex evaluations we provide. There are many scales and tests available to formally assess for ASD. In our office, we use the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2). This is considered to be the gold standard assessment tool in the field, and we can use it to assess for ASD in children of almost any age.
